EASTER GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Each & Everyone,
Spring is here, the clocks have moved forward and your hard working committee feels we need to move forward by promoting face to face group meetings (with one group offering the facility to join in on zoom for anyone reluctant to meet).
We're currently experimenting, trialling our monthly general meetings at Tylers Green Village Hall including May, while continuing to assess whether or not a return to the Beacon Centre in June is viable.
On Thursday afternoon 28 April beginning at 2 PM at the Beacon Centre we are inviting new members to meet the convenor or a representative of each group. The latter will introduce each group's activities to those of you who have recently joined us. You'll be most welcome.
Finally, do please phone me on 01494-680979 if there is any aspect of our u3a you wish to discuss.
John Evans, Chair

GENERAL MEETINGS
SPEAKER CHANGE
N.B. There will be a change to the speaker advertised for April 19th as Paul Barwick is unable to attend and his talk "Alexander Litvinienko - the man who solved his own murder" has been rescheduled. Instead Warren Ashton will bring us "Lose my head : the origins of common idioms and phrases".
Sandra Hurst - Speaker Secretary
MORE...
It was so pleasurable to return to our first face-to-face meeting last month after the COVID interruption of 2 years and to welcome the number of members who attended. Our speaker, Jeff Evans gave us a a very interesting and detailed presentation on 'Rock and Pop on the Box', covering the period from the mid-Fifties up to the present day. I am sure it brought back many happy memories for his audience, of growing up and living in such a transformative time, musically. Who can forget 'I'll give it five', quoted on any number of occasions since heard on 'Juke Box Jury'!!
'Lasting Power of Attorney' by Gaye Illsley
On 17th May, this talk will be at Tylers Green Village Hall when this important subject will be covered.
AGM
At our meeting on 21st June, when we will be holding our AGM, we are hopeful that we will be returning to the Beacon Centre. All details regarding the AGM will be e-mailed to you nearer the date and we encourage as many of you to attend as possible. This business should only take up a small part of the time, with it being followed by a talk on 'Summer Perennials and Drought Resistant Plants'. Let's hope this isn't a possible forewarning on lack of water this summer, but at least we will have had excellent advice.
Nicky Smith - Secretary

COMMITTEE - Urgent Appeal
I have to notify you that we are in real urgent need for new blood for our Committee. As by the AGM, at least four of our members will have completed their terms of office and are therefore stepping down.
I earnestly request on behalf of those of us left, for anybody who would consider joining our happy band to contact our Chairman, John Evans on 01494 680979 to discuss this further. Without sufficient numbers we are unable to operate efficiently or LEGALLY so consequently would be in danger of losing our U3A.
Nicky Smith - Secretary

FILM APPRECIATION
THE THIRD MAN Tuesday, 19th April 2022 @ 2pm Hedgerley Hall
UNMISSABLE' The Guardian 'A THING OF TRUE CINEMATIC BEAUTY' Empire 'CAUTION, GENIUS AT WORK' Dieter Shaw
THE THIRD MAN has been beautifully restored in 4k for the first time, showcasing the genius of this celebrated British noir, voted 'The greatest British Film of all time' by a British Film Institute poll.
Graham Greene (script) Carol Reed (director) Alexander Korda & David O Selznick (producers). Joseph Cotton & Trevor Howard (leads) a list of cinematic gold never to be repeated. Not to mention the famous zither score by Anton Karas, apparently picked up by Korda from a street entertainer in Vienna. Anton's lucky day.
104 minutes of pure movie magic. Don't miss it.

ANTIQUES & COLLECTABLES
Despite the winter weather and the rise in Covid cases we've continued to enjoy well attended meetings at the Curzon Centre. Topics have included 'Unique / Handmade' and 'Town & Countryside', each providing a wealth of items, and some fascinating insights into their origins and acquisition.
Our meeting on May 6th is a special celebration centred around the theme of 'Black & White', and should be a fun afternoon. Just a reminder that there will not be a meeting at the beginning of June as the date coincides with the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations.

WINE CLUB
Once again we had a very enjoyable evening in March when John treated us to some delightful and very reasonably priced wines from Waitrose, most of which were truly excellent. In April Michael has offered to present us with 'Wines of South America'. We meet on the third Wednesday evening of the month in Holtspur and would welcome new members to our friendly, informal group. Please contact Annie agwine@sbu3a.org.uk if you would like to join us.

SPANISH INTERMEDIATE
Hola! We are a small group and meet fortnightly on Monday afternoons in members houses. We aim to improve our Spanish mostly through conversation but also use teaching videos and games. We discuss our own and world news with varying degrees of fluency and support each other in our progress. New members are welcome, those at intermediate level would probably benefit most.

EXPLORING LOCAL CHURCHES
Due to the dreaded Covid Virus still being with us, and the vulnerability of some of our members, together with us having mainly explored the accessible local churches in the area, I have decided not to restart the Exploring Local Churches Group for this year. It has been a very enjoyable experience over the past years to visit the lovely historical churches in our area and learn their histories and to chat over a nice lunch prior to the visit, and if anyone else decides to start the Group again in the future I will be pleased to help all I can and join in the the visits. Many thanks to all our members for the pleasure of your company.
Dorothy.

BRIDGE
Since restarting at the beginning of March those who have attended have enjoyed duplicate bridge again in a friendly but competitive atmosphere. On 21st many were able to enjoy the postponed Christmas party which, this year, consisted of normal bridge but with Christmas cake as refreshment and a raffle with many valuable prizes.
As with all other clubs and groups Covid has made some members reluctant to return and others seem to have fallen by the wayside. On the other hand we are delighted to have welcomed eight new players. However, even with 46 on our register, we are only managing to have 5 or 6 playing tables. To be viable we need more players and for them to play regularly.
On normal Mondays we play 20 - 22 pre-dealt boards. There are hand records on-line after the finish!. We meet on 1st, 3rd & 5th Monday each month BUT NOT ON BANK HOLIDAYS. Please be there by 1.20pm for prompt 1.30pm start. We have to be finished and out of the hall by 4.30pm New players do please contact Liz before coming for the first time. If you need a partner contact Liz beforehand & she will try and find you one on a week by week basis. There is often someone looking to establish a regular partnership. Cost: £2 per session
