Two groups cater both for those who prefer a short, leisurely walk and for those who prefer something more challenging.

Please note that members and non-members join the walks at their own risk and would be advised to carry their own first aid kits. |

SHORT WALKS The Short Walks Group was formed nine years ago in response to a request for easier and shorter walking than the Walks Group. New members to the Branch often try the Short Walks/Exploratory Strolls Group before realising that they can in fact manage a longer walk. Most of our core-members do both and, of course, everyone who joins us takes part at their own risk. We are a small group - usually 10-12 on a walk - drawing on a catchment of around twenty. We are not hikers or even ramblers: we stop to look at the view - to please the leader who has often routed the walk to include it! We walk from 11.00 to 12.30 or 1.00, (when those who have time go to a pub) normally on the second Thursday of the month. Participants telephone the Convenor during the second week for the location. During the winter months Chiltern mud is often avoided by walking on the Crown Estate's tarmacadum in Windsor Great Park -Virginia Water, the Heather Garden. An annual wander through the Camellias in the Valley Gardens has become a ritual. 14 of us started 2005 high up at Ballinger, and in February were inspecting the Prince Consort Statue near Smith's Lawn. In March we were by the river at Boveney and lunching in style at The Palmer Arms. Two Valleys: Chess and Potkiln in April and May; Stoke Common and Shardeloes in June and blazing July, Fingest and Latimer in August and September. Coleshill, Burnham Beeches and Penn Wood ended a typically varied year. It is always advisable to confirm the meeting place one or two days beforehand, as local conditions can necessitate a change of venue, even at the last minute. Please ring Paddy, the short walks convenor, on 01753 662505 |
