28th November Programme (at 2pm)

Rossini's William Tell (1832)

At the end of the exhausting conveyor- belt of operas, Rossini tackled Schiller’s play on William Tell, the Swiss patriot who defied the Austrian Governor, and split the apple on his son’s head.

It is very difficult and expensive to stage, with back-projected Lake Lucerne and Alps cutting the cast down to size. And of course it requires the very best of high tenors!

The Overture is a concert in itself.

The discs in our 1988 La Scala production last 4 hours.

Creating a 2 hour programme is a challenge

Just 3 years of presenting screened opera in ways designed to both satisfy the experienced enthusiast, and to overcome the fears of the newcomer, have seen us outgrow our premises.    Our most senior initiate is just 96, but we can still aim higher!!

We have moved to the Beacon Centre which can seat over 200 with good sound and vision.  Some 30 visitors from 5 surrounding branches braved our initial test programme and we hope to strengthen the links made.

Please come and join us!
