Our Group has been getting out and about. In October we enjoyed a fascinating talk and demonstration of stumpwork - nothing to do with digging up old trees! This is raised, padded embroidery, which originated in the aristocratic houses of the mid 17th century. It employs many embroidery stitches including needlelace, machine embroidery, dyed fabric and many other skills. It produces a detailed three-dimensional effect. It was used originally for covering books, caskets, mirror surrounds, panels. Early
examples show biblical scenes, myths and legends or commemorative events and many can be seen in museums around the country. Some of us also spent an enjoyable day at Alexandra Palace at the annual Knitting and Stitching Show. There were many exhibitors, trade stands and some spectacular displays of work from the various Colleges of Art & Design. Temptation to buy was very strong and as a result of this some new cushions are now being worked on.Some of our work was on display at the Beaconsfield Open Day in June.
