Note: Membership of the group is capped at 50 with a waiting list. However there’s usually room for a few guests. But do please phone The Group mainly studies paintings, although members are interested in all forms of Art: in 2006 this has included the work of Sir Frank Brangwyn and Anton Gaudi. Focusing on the work of Cornish painters, we've heard about WaIter Langley, Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes, Dame Laura and Harold Knight, Sir Alfred Munnings, Harold Harvey, Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis and Ben Nicolson. Visiting Bournemouth's Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in June, we viewed Munnings' "Mrs. Dod Procter on horseback", and many coastal and maritime paintings. We aim for the formation of at least one sub-group a year studying a particular subject, although this is often difficult because of members' other commitments. For Autumn 2006 study of Women Artists is under consideration. Members are keen followers of London exhibitions, the convenor maintaining a list of current and future openings and related displays. Discovering Art is run by a convening team and everyone is expected to help in some way. Ten meetings a year are provided by members, and one by a professional external lecturer. On December 13th Mr. Bill Prescott will be giving A Short History of Decorative Tiles. All enquiries to Paddy Cooper please. |
